The Environmental Working Group's Shopper's Guide to Pesticides identifies fruits and vegetables that have the highest and lowest pesticide residues.
These 15 fruits and vegetables, which make up their "Clean 15" list, are least likely to be contaminated with pesticide residues.
The 16th included in this list is mushroom.
The Clean Sixteen are :
Cabbage, Cantaloupe, Cauliflower
Sweet corn, Sweet peas (frozen), Sweet potatoes
The reasons why they are low in pesticide residues are
a. Not Heavily Sprayed with Pesticides because they are Not Loved by Bug – e.g. asparagus, onions, sweet potatos
b. Easily Produced Crops – e.g. cabbage, sweet potatoes
c. Protective Outer Inedible Layer – e.g. swee peas (pod covering the peas)
d. Thick & Inedible Skin – e.g. pineapple
e. Thick Skin – e.g. avocado, eggplant, mangoes [need to wash the skin]
f. hairy skin keep pesticides at bay – e.g. kiwi
Organic Foods are always the best choice. Alternatively, go for this list of less contaminated non-organic food.
Whenever possible, 'wash' these fruits & vegetables to remove the pesticodes prior food preparation.
